Explaining Smartphone Sensing in Vehicles
Smartphone Sensing in Vehicles: Since driving safety has gained increasing attention during recent decades, there has been active research efforts towards developing sensing technologies in vehicles. Traditional sensing technologies in vehicles depends on specialized sensors, e.g., EEG machine, high-precision radar and camera, which involves extra cost and can only focused on a certain type of tasks. More recently, mobile devices like smartphones have been exploited to reinforce driving safety and improve driving experience. Differed from traditional sensing technologies with heavy infrastructures, with a rich set of sensors and the abilities in storage and computation, smartphones are appeared to be convenient to carry and available for varies types of sensing tasks in vehicles.
Generally, the sensing tasks in vehicles can be divided in three main categories as following:
- Sensing Conditions Outside Vehicles: focuses on enhancing the sensing abilities of drivers, making them more sensitive to the conditions of roads, traffic signs and other traffic participants. As the roads become more complicated and 4 1 Overview traffic participants increases greatly during recent decades, drivers are required to sense more information in order to make themselves safe and comfortable while driving, which requires drivers to be more focused and, as a result, makes drivers easy to be exhausted. By exploiting the sensing ability of smartphones, e.g., using cameras in smartphones to recognized other vehicles and traffic signs, it is possible for drivers to spend less effort and sense more traffic conditions.

- Sensing Conditions of Vehicles: aims at monitoring the conditions of vehicles, including current speed, location, etc., and behaviors of vehicles, such as turning, changing lanes, accelerating and breaking. As the basic unit to construct Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), it is essential to capture the conditions and behaviors of vehicles. However, even to nowadays, only some of the high-end vehicles are equipped with enough sensors for monitoring vehicle conditions, making it necessary to explore smartphones to sensing conditions of vehicles. Typically, the motion sensors in a smartphone (accelerator and gyroscope) are appropriate to detect the vehicle conditions.
- Sensing Behaviors of Drivers: studies on detecting different driving behaviors of drivers when they are driving, especially the behaviors that are dangerous, including inattentive, distracted, fatigue, drunk, using mobile devices while driving, etc. Due to the independence of each vehicle in the road, these behaviors of drivers are hard to be detected in time from outside the vehicles, and sometimes even difficult to be noticed by the drivers themselves. As a result, to prevent dangerous driving behaviors by monitoring the behaviors of drivers, smartphones are exploited to be the detector.
